Hiring & Recruitment: What should you be aware of when advertising roles?

Advertising for new staff is exciting. It shows your business is expanding, plus it’s a great way to reach a wider audience.

First you should remember that you’re not actually legally required to advertise a job.

However, advertising for a vacancy has benefits:

  • You’re less likely to break the law by discriminating (regardless of your intentions)
  • You’ll more likely to reach a wider range of applicants

Job applicants have the benefit of laws that prohibit discrimination and employers should take care not to discriminate.

This includes in matters such as the content of job adverts, how interviews are run, selection of successful candidates and the terms on which roles are offered.

The protected characteristics under UK law for the purposes of protection from discrimination are currently: sex, race, disability, religion or belief, sexual orientation, age, marriage and civil partnership status, gender reassignment, and pregnancy and maternity.
